In light of today's test, the homework for tonight is fairly light-weight:
- P. 91 (Chapter 5), #4 and #6
In spite of the instructions, you MAY use a calculator for the basic arithmatic in #4.
- Categorical and Quantitative Data; Discrete and Continuous Data
For each, describe as categorical (qualitative) or quantitative (numerical). If quantitative (numerical, also describe as discrete or continuous). - Practice: p. 17, #9
- P. 17, #12 or #20
- Experimental vs. Observational Study - Explain your answers
- Practice: p. 314 #7
- P. 314, #8 or #10
- Experimental Design
- Practice: P. 317 #39
- P. 317 #28 or #40
- Parameter and Statistic - Refer to reading on p. 275-276
Describe the population and the parameter of interest. The describe the sample and the sample statistic. Select the appropriate symbols for each. - Practice: p. 289 #3
- P. 289 #4 or #7
- Categorical Variables - Is there an association (dependence) or no association (independence)
- Practice: p. 40 #27a-d plus segmented bar graph
- P. 40 #28a, b, plus segmented bar graph
- Describing Distributions (CUSS & BS)
- Practice: p. 65 #9b
- p. 132 #11 - construct back-to-back stemplots to compare Friday and Monday
Since we took our quiz today, the assignment over the weekend is just these three problems. We will start chapter 5 in class on Monday~
- Ch 3, p.39, #24 abcdg* (the graph on part "g" is optional)
- Ch 4, p.65, #18,37* (refer to p. 57 for an example of a timeplot)
- Review 5.1-5.2, 6.1-6.3.doc | pdf format
- Solutions: Review 5.1-5.2, 6.1-6.3 answers.pdf (show all work!!! no work = no credit)
- p. 65, #5, 7, 9, 12, 14, 36 (use graph paper for any graphs, and make sure your responses are in context)
- Ogive Worksheet #2, 1ab, 2ab (download here)
- p. 317, #36 ("Gas Mileage")
Since you are not told what type of experimental design to use, carefully consider the question that the experiment will attempt to answer and what type of design is best. Spend time re-reading the problem and putting yourself into the situation before you start writing.
- Read/skim p. 50-53 ("Shape, Center, Spread")
- p. 65, #3, 4 (Please use complete sentences for explanations! <-- this should go without saying from now on!)
- p. 39, #26* with the following instructions:
- first, find the conditional distribution of hepatitis status by tattoo status (ex: find the percent of people with no tattoo who have and do not have hepatitis, etc.) and record the percents in a chart
- next, make a decision concerning the dependence or independence of tattoo status and hepatitis status and explain your reasoning.
- Using GRAPH PAPER, graph the data in two different ways - one way should be using a segmented bar graph (Example on pg. 29 of your textbook, also instructions are in this powerpoint file, slides 8-11) and the other graph is left up to you.
There are also two worksheets:
- 4 Challenger O-ring data.pdf
- 4 Features of Distributions Activity.pdf - write your responses in complete sentences and always use context (talk about the classes exam scores). Read the directions carefully.
Here is the worksheet that goes with HW assignment #8, due on Friday, September 17 (the remainder of the assignment is as-is from the calendar):
- P. 315, #22, 23, 24, 25, 32, 38
- Worksheet (both pages): 13 Worksheet - Experimental Design (Blocking Fish Farms).pdf
- Read p. 20-24
First off, the homework is similar to what is on the syllabus:
- p.313, #1, 4, 11, 18 (omit parts f, g, h for each question)
- Read p. 296-309 (this is the addition)
And the announcement about the test...
as many of you could tell, there was no simulation question on the exam. So... we will be giving one simulation test question in class on Monday (we will have a few minutes to study for it), and it will be worth 14 points of test #1. This will take about 10 minutes of class.
Please contact me if you have any questions about this~
- Ch 13, #6, 12, 16 (Identify each as observational study, experimental study, or sampling only - skip the other parts)
- Read p. 276-277 regarding simple random samples!!!
- Ch 11, #11, 25 (run 3 trials beginning on line 21 p. A-77)
- Ch 12, #2, 5 (answer parts a-f)
- Ch 12, #15 and 19
- Ch 12, #16 and 20
- Ch 12, #21
Our first test of the year is on Wednesday, September 8, and will cover sections 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.7, and 1.10 (which are the sections that we have covered thus far). Here is the review sheet for the test, which is due on the 8th.
Here is the [slight adjusted] HW assignment due on Tuesday, September 7 (yay for 3-day weekends!):
- p. 266, #14
- p. 291, #13, 14, 18, 27, 31, 32
- Read p. 293-295
